EATING HEALTHY ON A BUDGET

Have you ever caught yourself believing the lie that eating healthy is too expensive?

You aren’t the only one! There is a strong belief that fresh, home-cooked meals cost a fortune.

However, this is not always the case. With a little extra effort and strategy, you can fit healthy eating into your budget.

MAKE A PLAN + STICK TO IT

Going to the store with a detailed grocery list and plan is simple yet very effective. Shopping without an idea of what you need can lead to unnecessary expenses and waste.

BE AWARE OF WHAT IS IN SEASON

Buying produce in season is a win win. It is in its peak flavor as well as at its best price.

FLEXIBLE RECIPES

Select recipes that allow for some flexibility, such as casserole or soup dishes. Often times, these dishes call for a wide variety of fresh produce, allowing you to double up or opt for what’s in season or on sale.

DON’T FEAR FROZEN

MYTH: Frozen fruits and vegetables are less healthy (with less nutrients) than fresh.

FACT: Frozen fruits and vegetables are often picked at peak ripeness. Then washed, blanched, frozen, and packaged within a few hours of being harvested.

Frozen fruits and vegetables can be cheaper than fresh, depending on the season, and they come with the added benefit of lasting longer, therefore less food waste.

NOTE: Another budget-friendly option includes canned fruits and vegetables. When it comes to canned fruits, be aware of added syrups, as this packs in additional calories.

COUPONS + SAVINGS APPS

Check to see if you local grocery store has a savings card or app.

I feel like this is so overlooked! I, on the other hand, am Kroger’s biggest coupon fan with their savings app. In the last 3 months alone, I’ve saved $89 through digitally clipping coupons to my savings card and then using it at check out.
